Follow-Up on Bikes for Tykes

As we grudgingly take our holiday decorations down, a sense of sadness can overcome some of us. The holidays and the joy that surrounds them are over. So take a minute to read about the follow-up to our Bikes for Tykes Program, and hold on to that holiday spirit just a little bit longer.

This was the 8th year for the program and overall all we have collected 2,135 bikes from the community. Of that number we have been able to refurbish and donate 1,510 to needy children in the Philadelphia area. This year alone, we collected 135 bikes and were able to redistribute 110 of them. Between the four charities we provided for (Women’s Christian Alliance in Philadelphia, Southwest Community Enrichment Center in Philadelphia, Visiting Nurses’ Association of Abington, and Delta Community Services of Glenside), we were able to reach their requested quotas, which is a great accomplishment! We would like to thank the 33 Sussman employees who were part of the refurbishing process: inflating tires, fixing chains, and washing down the bikes to make them look like new. These volunteers really brought the program home in their effort to make someone else’s holiday extra special.

We would particularly like to thank you, the community, for making all the donations through the years. The success of the program is 100% due to your generous contributions. Maybe you were going to throw out that old bike or pass it down to someone else in your family, but you didn’t, and for that there are 1,510 grateful children who had a better holiday because of it.

Thank you cards from the Visiting Nurse Association

So as we receive the thank you notes from the kids, and letters of appreciation from the organizations, we would like to pass that on to you. Thank you for your selflessness and outreach to those in the community who need it most. We hope it made your holiday season brighter too!
